What does order picking mean in logistics?
When it comes to e-commerce, freight transportation and the associated logistics tasks are of paramount importance. Efficient delivery is also supported by professional order picking, so it's worth exploring what this concept entails.
Order picking or goods collection
One of the most important terms used in logistics work is order picking, which essentially means goods collection. The process covers receiving the order, selecting and collecting individual products according to the order, and assembling them per order. It is understandable that the efficiency of order picking plays a decisive role in customer satisfaction, as smooth goods collection is essential for fast delivery.
The ever-growing e-commerce market expects increasing efficiency. During the coronavirus pandemic, online orders became more popular in our country, even for product types that customers previously preferred to purchase in stores. This trend has only grown since the end of the pandemic, so it is now common for stores to offer one- or two-day or even same-day delivery.
Order picking before international and domestic goods transport
For companies to fulfill orders with such speed, precise, well-organized order picking work is needed. After processing the order, the first step in the process is always preparing the goods, during which the products are made available for picking. During picking, the ordered products are collected from the storage location and the order is assembled. After the order is assembled, the finished packages must be checked again, thus guaranteeing the avoidance of possible errors. Order picking can be done in a one-step or two-step system. In one-step order picking, the products for the given order are always collected, while in two-step order picking, the products for the orders to be fulfilled at the same time are collected simultaneously. The great advantage of two-step order picking is that even with higher traffic, orders can be fulfilled quickly, but correct application of the method requires more complex logistical organization.
