General Information About Freight Transportation Permits
One way of road freight transportation is goods delivery by truck, or freight transportation. If someone wants to pursue this profession as an employee, it is essential to have the proper permits, licenses, and, of course, a specialized qualification. The required permit always depends on whether you are transporting goods or passengers, conducting domestic or international transportation, and even handling hazardous goods or waste, which requires a specific permit. Without aiming for completeness, here is a list of the most important types of permits:
- road freight forwarding permit (for vehicles exceeding 2.5 tons, conducting road freight for compensation);
- road freight transportation license (for vehicles exceeding 7.5 tons, with self-issued invoices);
- driver's license categories C1, C1+E, C, C+E;
- carrier permit;
- valid vehicle registration certificate;
- community license (required only for international loading and unloading);
- CEMT permit (permit established by the International Transport Forum);
- in addition, numerous other permits may be necessary for specific transportation activities, such as transporting hazardous waste or goods.
Freight Transportation Training
To engage in freight transportation with a truck, you must attend a GKI course. This training includes both theoretical and practical instruction and lasts approximately one week. If you pass the challenges successfully and perform well in the exams, you will receive a so-called GKI card. It is important to note that this is not for a lifetime; it must be renewed strictly every five years. In such cases, you do not need to retake the entire course, only a refresher course.
